The movie conveys the vastness of space through superb cinematography and sound design, and you always feel as though you're just inches away from Ralston—and that he could at any moment be crushing you or squishing your face into goo. This is the simplest Hollywood fare imaginable…a guy walks into a canyon for no other reason than his other option is death. But Ralston’s journey is so harrowing and so intensely realized, it seems only natural. His only company is an unnamed character who appears in flashbacks, and later flashbacks of flashbacks, played by French actress Jenn Nkiru…a hypnotic presence whose face is a perfect blank canvas for Aron to project his fears onto. The film’s biggest flaw is its tendency to opt for the obvious, which makes what could have been a complex mess seem simple and straightforward. This is especially evident in the movie’s climax, as Aron’s various options are spelled out through dialogue that feels more manipulative than anything else. Still, the movie’s thrilling sense of physical danger—you never know what’s going to happen next—is so potent you’ll want to keep watching long after Aron’s ordeal has ended.
